What did we do before pre-packaged and processed foods?  Sometimes I feel like the only person that asks these questions.  I know it is not true as my husband and sons ask the same questions and we are frustrated by the amount of waste that it takes to shop for simple things, like food.  I cannot bring my own containers to the grocery store to stock up on steel cut oats, cous cous, or quinoa.  I have to use their plastic bags, with their plastic tags.  Plastic, plastic, plastic.

Then of course there is the organic produce section where nearly everything is packaged with plastic, same with the meat department, dairy, etc.  Plastic, plastic, plastic.  I just want to purchase the ingredients, I don't want the packaging!  Not even if it looks pretty.  One time use packaging is just wasteful.

Then of course there is the amount of traveling most of the supermarket food does.  I do not want my food coming from China, Chile, Mexico or any other country.  I have nothing against them, not at all.  However, I think the amount of energy it takes for all of that food to be grown should stay there and feed their own people.  Since I live in Texas, I try and stick to Texas grown food, and as close to home as possible since this is a really big state.

Apparently I am not the only person who feels this way. In Austin, later this summer a new store it opening (it was due to open last year, but there were hiccups).  in.gredients, it is ALL local food, grown by local farmers and growers.  The best part?  Bring your own packaging.  It is a zero waste facility.  Old produce that does not sell will get composted.  They even have an on site garden in which you can get the very freshest produce.

What else will be there?  Wine.  Beer.  Fruits, veggies, grains, baking necessities that are sourced locally.  Oh and did I mention for those who need foods that are gluten free, you will be serviced as well?  How wonderful!

If you love the idea of Zero Waste, sustainability, and buying local please pass this around to everyone you know.  If you live in the Austin, Texas area, please support this company and this idea.  Stay tuned for when they open and pop on over there and say hello.  Way to go Texas for coming up with this great idea!  Wah-hoo!!!
